HOPE Virtue – Light of the World

Light of the World – Courtney Elliott

Since God called us to start HOPE Academy in the spring of 2011 the lyrics of the Phil Wickham song, “In Your City” have marked my mind with an image of a city high on a hill with brilliant rays of light penetrating like spears through the darkness. The hill upon which the city sits is washed over in the same brilliant gold that pierces through the sky.

When a dear friend, reached out to us to design the logo for the school that spring we all prayed about the image God would give her. Without the knowledge of anything that we envisioned she created the HOPE sun with its rays piercing through the word. It is amazing that God, the Creator, the King of Kings, not only cares about the details but is the author of them.

The HOPE Academy logo is a symbol of how God calls believers to be the light of hope in a dark and depraved world.

In Matthew 5, it says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill can’t be hidden. Also, people do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand. Then it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Like that city I have pictured in my mind, I pray we will live courageously, brilliantly, so that our lives will push through the darkness. There is hope in light, be it the rising sun over a salty marsh, the flickering of a candle that dances through the heavy dark, or simply enough the street light that beckons flying critters to bask in its warm glow. There is hope in the radiant light of our God.
